Task
29 hours

3. Instructions In this task, you are expected to pick a sociolinguistic issue in

essay that describes the topic and argues its relevant points.
For example:
English teachers should be native English speakers only.
Standard English is the only valid variety.
You are expected to use a minimum of 10 resources for this task.
4. Structure Follow a 3-paragraph structure that adheres to the following.
Introduction
Provide a background discussion that foregrounds the
importance of your topic of choice.
Introduce the topic of your choice by providing a definition,
explanation, or history of the narrowed topic.
State the objective of your paper and the reader orientation.
Body
The number of paragraphs should equate what you outline in
your reader orientation.
Each paragraph begins with a topic sentence that stipulates
the each argument you want to make regarding your chosen
topic. The rest develops the point you make in each
paragraph weaving in the supporting references.
Conclusion
A recap of the description of the sociolinguistic issue.
A re-statement of the arguments you made.
A critical comment on what you have learned on this issue.

5. Marking criteria Your work, which is 40% of your total grade in this unit, will be
marked using the following criteria. Please note that the criteria
are weighted variably.
A. CONTENT (50%)
There is a clear introduction of the chosen
sociolinguistic issue.
The arguments are well articulated and well argued.
Sufficient and relevant references are used.
B. STRUCTURE (30%)
The INTRODUCTION neatly follows the inverted
pyramid structure (as discussed in class).
The paragraphs of the BODY develop the thesis well
following the structure of argument + explanation +
supporting points + concluding statement.
C. Clarity of expression (20%)
The conventions of academic English are followed
appropriately.
The APA 6th convention is faithfully followed.
