Structuring and writing Milestone 2:
This is an essay paper. We’re looking for organization, detailed information on your conflict and geographical contexts, and we’re also looking for citations.
Introduction: Introductions should introduce your topic and the country/region of your topic. You should also have a roadmap of your paper to help you organize as you write as well as help your reader (your instructor) to know what to expect in your paper. This roadmap can be something like a sentence at then end of your introduction paragraph that says, “In this paper, I will first start with a brief overview of race relations in the American South and then I’ll discuss how segregation, economic disparity, and treatment toward activists all have an effect on the continued conflict regarding…” This is helpful because sometimes it’s easy to get off of the subject of the paper, and being able to look at your introduction to see if you’re staying focused is always helpful.
Conflict is central: Your conflict should be the center of your paper. The information that you mention about the physical/social geography should be relevant to your conflict. For example, if you are talking about the climate in a place, can you also say explicitly why the climate is important to the conflict? It might be for sure; I just need to know what connections you are making.
Quotes: Using a quotation is like using salt; do so sparingly. If there is a particularly amazing phrasing of something, then it’s okay to use a quote (not really long!). Otherwise, I want to hear your words, your understanding of what your source is saying. Please do not cut and paste quotes one after the other to write your paper in other people’s words.
Citations: Finally, you need to make sure that you are doing a Works Cited AND in-text citations in your paper. You can choose APA or MLA formatting, but you must do this. If you do not do both of these, you are plagiarizing (see policies on plagiarism), and there are serious consequences to plagiarism on your grade. If you are having some questions about how to cite, then an excellent resource is OWL Purdue (MLA and APA).
