Perhaps the most difficult adjustment for counselors and therapists from Western cultures is the adoption of a “systems” perspective because our personal experience in Western culture often tell us that we are autonomous individuals, capable of free and independent choice. Post-modern approaches such as constructivism and SFBT challenge the basic assumptions of most of the traditional approaches by assuming that there is no single “truth” and that reality is socially constructed through human interaction. What we consider to be “truth” is a product of interactions between people in daily life. Thus there is not a single or “right” way to live one’s life or to understand the world. Both solution-focused brief therapy and motivational interviewing emphasize viewing the client-as-expert, creating new stories, establishing a collaborative therapeutic relationship, discovering resources and strengths of the client, and separating the problem from the person.
