For Topics 1-8, you will be provided with journal topics from the assigned readings. Reflect on those topics from your own personal experiences, but always be sure that your journal entry follows the instructions and covers the topics described.

These journal entries should not be in APA format. They are first-person accounts of experiences and your understanding of those experiences in light of the sociological concepts referred to in the instructions. The purpose of these journal reflections is to give you the opportunity to demonstrate that you understand the concepts and can apply them to your own life and situation. Thus, you should always name and define the concept, but the focus should be on your own personal experiences with or of that concept.

For each part of the Journal assignment, compose a response with a minimum of 250 words.

These journal entries are designed to allow you to see how your own personal experiences or situation is relevant to the kinds of things that sociologists study. You will not be asked to share them with anyone other than the instructor of this class. It is hoped that this will allow you to be open and honest when controversial or personal topics are explored.

Part I: Marriage and Family Journal (Entry #1)

A myth is a belief that is accepted uncritically. We often act as if something is true when, in fact, we have not stopped to examine the belief that led us to act a certain way. (Note that something may be true but it still qualifies as a myth until it has been investigated, tested, or analyzed and shown to be accurate or true.)

Chapter 1 describes seven “Myths about Family Life” (p. 6 ff.). Choose one of these myths that you thought was true (accurately described the situation with marriages and families today) and analyze why you accepted this myth as true. Give examples or other reasons why you accepted it. Do you now see why the authors say that this belief should not be accepted uncritically? Explain.

Part II: Marriage and Family Journal (Entry #2)

If you come from one of the diverse types of families described in Chapter 2 (e.g., a family from a culture other than the American culture; a single-parent family; a family from an ethnic subculture within the United States, such as the African American family, the Hispanic family, the Asian- American family, the Native American family, or an interracial family, or a family with same-sex parents), describe your family of orientation (the family in which you grew up). Include such characteristics as the number of members of the family and their relationship to you, the social class of your family, the type(s) of neighborhood or locale(s) where your family lived, how close the relationships were with extended family members such as grandparents, aunts and uncles, and cousins, etc.

If you did not grow up in one of the above types of families, describe your own family of orientation with particular reference to any of the types of families described above. That is, was your town or neighborhood segregated by race or ethnicity? Did you or your family socialize with members of families which were not like your family? Why or why not?
