Autobiography on Bishop Fulton J Sheen

I need an autobiography on Bishop J Sheen in first person form.
Please ready carefully the instructions.

ASSIGNMENT ONE — REQUIRMENTS & DIRECTIONS
RESEARCHING YOUR PAPER
• This ‘autobiography’ assignment requires that you make use of a minimum of 4 proper
academic sources in writing your paper. A proper academic source is something that has
been accepted and reviewed by the academic community: published books, articles,
encyclopedia entries, etc. Just because something is online does not mean it is an acceptable
academic source. If you are wondering if a source is acceptable for use or not, always ask.
• Researching your topic means going to the libraries, and online, to find information not
provided in course readings, not in the provided articles, or lectures notes: these are not
considered academic sources – these are secondary sources and should not be cited.
• If you require help finding source materials for your paper – ASK! Ask the librarians,
professor, advisors, etc. Do not wait until the day before your paper is due to ask for
help!
At the Library:
Make sure that you know how to use the University of Manitoba Library Catalogue, especially
how to do ‘subject’ and ‘keyword’ searches. The “One Stop Search” at the library website is a
good place to start. You can also check the following for online versions:
• works available on Catholicism in the Reference Section of the St. Paul’s College Library
• the Guide to Catholic Periodical Literature (St. Paul’s Reference) which compiles a yearly
index of journal articles (listed by author and subject) related to Roman Catholicism. Don’t
neglect popular magazines like Time or Newsweek
• the ATLA Religion Database of articles on religion (any Campus Library’s list of on-line
databases)
Do not go to a library, find a big book about the person you are researching, and assume
that you are done. Seldom does one book or article, even if it is long and detailed, provide
everything you will need. Usually a biography makes a person look good but you will often
discover—if you read two accounts of the same person’s life—different interpretations and
emphases. Try this approach to accurately understand, and to get the necessary perspective. At
the same time, do not try to read everything you can find on your assigned person. Remember,
you are writing a 1500-2000-word essay; do not try to include every single detail of a person’s
life into your paper, be selective.
Try to be conscious of the biases of various writers. In the SPC Library, for example,
there are several Catholic Journals and Newspapers. The National Catholic Reporter (USA)
and Catholic New Times (Canada), for example, are described as ‘left’ of center. The Weekly
Standard is ‘right’ of center.
Online:
The World Wide Web can be a great source of useful information. But anyone can put
almost anything they wish on the Web, including stuff that is not true. Generally, think of the
Web as an odd mix of scholarship, personal opinion, and public relations junk (especially so
in matters of religion). If you use online resources, you need to be able to make such
distinctions to ensure a given site’s reliability. Always try to find quality sites. Web sites run
by universities, reputable media outlets (like the BBC or CBC), organizations like the United
Nations or the Vatican, are generally very trustworthy. If you use a Web site that is not
obviously academic, be careful. Academic sources include documents that have been
reviewed by others in the field, items that are published by accredited institutions and wellknown organization. Personal opinions of non-experts are not good sources for academic
papers. Web sites that emphasize conspiracy theories, hate-speech, extreme negative opinions
and/or unfounded/fake facts are NOT academic and NOT accurate. Use of such sites can
lower your grade. If in doubt, ask!
WHAT TO INCLUDE AND HOW TO ORGANIZE THE ASSIGNMENT
To get full marks in each of the sections of the evaluation sheet for this assignment you
should make sure you have answered the following questions somewhere in the paper:
1. Did I write this paper in 1st
-person format, as if I was that person? What was ‘my’ big
contribution to Catholicism or the world? Am I significant to history or today?
2. Did I include the major details of ‘my’ life?
3. What exactly was my time period like? Was society different than today?
4. Was I ahead of the times or was I behind the times? In other words, were my
ideas or contributions old or new compared to everyone around me?
5. Would I have been better off living in a different period of history?
6. Do I deserve to be respected or not? How would Catholics and others today feel
about me?
7. What are my strengths and weaknesses? Did I leave a positive or negative
impact on Catholicism?
WRITING YOUR ESSAY
Generally, one does not use the pronoun of ‘I’ in an academic paper (apart from
opinion pieces), but because this is an ‘autobiography’ you must write it in the ‘firstperson’ format, using terms such as ‘I’ and ‘my’ and ‘mine’. Handing in the assignment as a
simple biography of someone will result in a very low grade.
In the process of doing research for this essay, you will encounter articles, books, and
Web sites offering different opinions about the significance of the person you have chosen for
this assignment. To proper write this autobiography, imagine how they would record the
story of their life. How would they answer questions? As you do this, you will need to make
decisions about what to include. Not everything in someone’s life will be related to our study of
Catholicism. Some of the questions listed above require you to form an opinion about the person
you are writing about – be honest, if it is positive, say so, if it is negative, then be truthful.
TIPS FOR WRITING A GOOD ESSAY
Essay writing demands careful, precise thinking and expression. Developing your ability
to think and express that thinking clearly is a significant goal of “W” courses. Consequently, the
quality of your writing will affect your paper’s grade. Only rarely can anyone communicate good
ideas in a poorly written paper.
Be sure to write a well-structured essay with an introduction which states your
central thesis, a body which elaborates upon and demonstrates the truth of it, and a strong
conclusion which states your views. The “classic” form of writing an essay is simple—indicate
what you are going to say, say it, then indicate that you have said it.
Be sure that your essay has a clear, well-defined focus which can be adequately treated in
a short essay. You may come across things which seem important but are not related to the focus
of this essay. These can be addressed in endnotes/footnotes, if you wish. Also, statements like,
“X is also important, but cannot be treated here” or “a longer paper would also investigate Y”
demonstrate your ability to narrow your topic while being aware of its wider implications.
GRADING WILL ALSO BE BASED ON THESE CRITERIA
1. Essay conforms to an appropriate APA style manual, especially regarding in-text
citations and the bibliography.
2. The paper is legible; it is double-spaced; it is the correct length (1500 words minimum,
2000 maximum); it is presented neatly.
3. Paper includes a title page with you name, student #, date, title of paper, and who it is for.
4. If handed in (rather than e-mailed), the paper is stapled in the upper left-hand corner (do NOT
put it in a cardboard or plastic folder).
5. Formal Canadian English is used. Avoid contractions, clichés, and slang language. If you
use a spell checker, set its options to “Canadian English (CE). If you use a “grammar checker,”
set its options to “formal.”
6. Non-gendered language is used when referring to human beings unless specifically discussing
a man or woman. [READ the University of Manitoba’s “Language Usage Guidelines”, in
University Policies, University of Manitoba Undergraduate Calendar.]
7. Essay has been carefully proof-read for grammatical and spelling errors. Spell-check
helps, but it does NOT catch everything that proof-reading does.
8. Direct quotations are indicated as such and their source properly documented with citations.
Indirect quotations or paraphrases are also to be cited properly. Web pages are cited according
to the guidelines given in the APA style-manual. These in-paper references must be formatted
according to one of the outlined styled guides. Failure to document your sources is
dishonest and will lower your grade substantially.
9. Make sure you include a complete, and correct, bibliography of ALL sources used.
If you have never done a formal paper before at the U of M, or have trouble with basic
English composition, it is highly recommended that you find the:
