Case Study: International Management and Amazon’s Healthcare Products
The world’s population is aging rapidly and it has contributed to changing business in Amazon. Recently, Amazon has entered the healthcare market and connects global suppliers with customers of healthcare products. This has contributed to decrease in price of healthcare items but has increased access to unreliable and (sometimes) dangerous suppliers who might not use the same quality standard as their competitor’s. However, for many large and small hospitals, it is beneficial to use Amazon suppliers because of the fast delivery and low prices. Therefore, an emphasis has been placed on managing the risk of buying healthcare related items purchased through Amazon.

Assume that you are part of Amazon’s executive management team.
The Vice President of Supply Chain Operations asks you to list 3 types of wastes and discuss methods to eliminate them relating to Amazon’s healthcare product deliveries.
Hints:
1. (10 points) List 3 types of wastes for Amazon’s healthcare that contribute to wastage in the area of “product deliveries” (delivering products to customers). See Additional-Lecture-1 materials to discover different types of wastes.
2. (10 points) Use three paragraphs to explain how Amazon could overcome (eliminate) each types of wastage that you’ve mentioned above and how the company could gain value instead in those activities (use one paragraphs for each waste).
Directions:
This assignment is given to practice your “Lean” thinking. The assignment states that you find 3 activities that are considered as “waste” (also known as “Muda”). These activities must be related to Amazon’s healthcare product delivery. Important note: Don’t focus on Amazon’s products or operations in general but rather on the logistics (delivering the healthcare products).
You should study your additional lecture slides posted on blackboard (which lists 8 types of “waste” for Lean operations) and become familiar with the types of activities that are considered as “waste” in the Lean practice.
Q1: you have to pick 3 types of activities that could be considered as waste (for healthcare product delivery). For this question, you should also state “why” you think a particular activity is a waste.
Q2: you need to use one paragraph for each of the above wasted-activity to discuss how Amazon could overcome the waste.
