Children’s Books Review A review of 10 children’s books with required write-up on each, worth 100 points. Each review must be at least one-half page (150 words minimum) in length. Books must be targeted for children age twelve and under, though not limited to any specific age group. Children’s Books Review Emergent literacy is an important issue in child development. Questions arise including when do children begin to understand that words are symbols with meaning? When does the alphabet become more than a song? What do the squiggles that children make when then draw represent to them? How can we support a child’s emerging interest and skill in learning how to read and write? One of the most tried and true methods of supporting emerging literacy is exposure to children’s books. Reading to children from infancy on produces positive effects in their literacy development. Select 10 children’s books (go to your local library or if you’re in the vicinity of Delta, Goleman Library on campus has a children’s book section; you might have a friends who have children’s books you can borrow for your review…) to read and review. Books could be picture books for infants, toddlers or preschoolers, or chapter books for older children. You do not have to limit your review to one particular age group. After reading each book, respond to the following questions–please address the questions using this outline form–if you condense the questions into paragraph form, points will be deducted. The reason for using the outline form is to be sure to cover all required areas: 1)Bibliographic information on the book (author’s name, title of book, illustrator’s name if applicable, publisher, and date of publication). 2)Target age group for the story (some books will have this information on it; if not, give it your best shot). 3)Brief summary of the story. The summary should contain enough information to convey the story. One or two sentence summaries are inadequate. At least one fully developed paragraph is expected. 4)Main point expressed in the story. This must be addressed separately from the summary. What point was the author trying to convey in the story? 5)Your evaluation of the illustrations, if applicable. If no illustration, say so. Thoughtful, descriptive evaluations are expected. Your evaluation of the story–specifically address each of the following: 6)Would the target age group grasp the book’s message? Why or why not? 7)Would the book hold a child’s interest? Why or why not? 8)As an adult making a purchasing decision, do you think this book would be a valuable addition to a child’s home library? Why or why not?
