Project 3: Art or Architecture Analysis

You will create a TED talk in which you analyze the design of a work of art or architecture. You may write a 500-word essay. Step 1: Go to the Google Arts and Culture web site (opens in a new window). There you will find thousands of images of paintings, drawings, buildings, and other works of art. Browse around until you find a painting or a building that you would like to analyze. Study the image and use the guidelines below to analyze it.

Step 2: Watch this video to see an example of an art analysis: Art historical analysis (painting), a basic introduction using Goya’s Third of May, 1808 (new window).

Step 3: Visit this web site to see an outline of an art analysis: University of Arkansas at Little Rock Department of Art’s, “Guidelines for Analysis of Art” (new window).

Step 4: Decide what kind of talk you want to create. I would prefer that you make a 3-5 minute video or presentation with voice over.

For a Video: Use your phone camera to make a video of yourself talking about a work of art. Please show the work of art, not just your face. Point to details in the work of art that you are explaining. Use a poster or paper to highlight details of the history of the work. Then upload your video to Youtube and send me the link.

For a Presentation with Voice Over: Use PowerPoint or another tool. Please show the work of art and other important information on your slides and explain, vocally, what we are too observe and understand. See How to Record Narration for a PowerPoint Presentation For Dummies (new window) and 5 Ways Students Can Create Audio Slideshows (new window).

If you find that you just can’t manage a presentation, I will accept a 500 word essay.

Step 5: Create your TED talk.

Begin your talk by introducing the work of art you picked to analyze. You should give the name of the work, the artist or architect, the materials it is made of, and the date and location of its creation. Discuss any important information that you have gathered about the historical context of the work.
Next, describe the work in detail. For a guide to know how to describe a work of art, use the University of Arkansas at Little Rock Department of Art’s, “Guidelines for Analysis of Art” (new window). *FOR A GOOD GRADE, BE SURE YOU FOLLOW THESE GUIDELINES.*
Be sure that as you describe your work of art you also bring in any important historical or contextual factors that you have discovered.
Conclude your talk by making a solid argument about the value of the work as a result of the artist’s or architect’s careful design. Discuss the emotional impact of the work and the message it transmits to the viewer. Wrap up your talk with a statement about the general value of art in the lives of humans and why it is important for a civilized culture to support the arts.
Make your Works Cited page a separate page at the end (see below).
