 Karen had 46 stickers.  She put some in her sticker book.  She had 22 to keep for another day.  How many stickers did she put in her book? Raina put 5 dimes into her bank.  The next day she put 10 pennies into her bank.  How many coins did she put into her bank? Jake built a tower with legos. He used 6 blue legos and 5 yellow legos and 4 green legos How many legos did he use? Sally went to the park and counted some ducks.  The next day she went back and counted 5 ducks.  Sally told her teacher she saw 12 ducks.  How many did she see the first day? I bought cards and envelopes at the store.  I bought 16 cards and 11 envelopes.  How many more cards than envelopes did I buy? Gabe rode 13 miles on his bike.  Julie rode 5 fewer miles than Gabe.  How many miles did Julie ride? There were 18 leaves on the sidewalk.  Some were red and the rest were orange.  How many leaves could be red?   How many leaves could be orange? The tray had chocolate cupcakes.  Then grandma shared 6 cupcakes with the neighbors.  Now she has 2 cupcakes on the tray. How many cupcakes were on the tray to start with? Hillary cut 24 inches of ribbon for a package.  She needed to cut some more for a bow.   She used 36 inches of ribbon for the package.  How much did she use just for the bow? There were 21 children on the playground.  13 children were on the swings.  The rest were playing tag.  How many children were playing tag? The mailman had 13 letters in his bag.  He delivered 6 of the letters.  How many letters does he have left in his bag? There were 5 bears in the front row of the movie.  There were 4 more bears in the second row than in the front row.  How many bears were in the second row of the movies?

1. Revisit the word problems on the practice page above. Re-write the comparison story problems on a piece of paper. Draw a tape diagram that follows the structure of the story. Make sure to label the tape diagram with words and quantities that connect back to the story. Write the equations that could be used to find the solution to the problem.
2. Select 3 other story problems to re-write (1 – take from, 1-join, 1 put together/take apart) Rewrite them on a piece of paper. Use a tape diagram to model out the problem. Write the equation that could be used to find a solution. If you select one that is challenging and can’t figure it out, then try another one.
