Preparing a Job Application

You are required to select the job you are most interested in and most suitable for, from those provided in the
Assessment Task 3 folder on CloudDeakin. In making a choice, consider your transferable skills highlighted during
the work completed in seminars in weeks 8 and 9.
Once you have chosen a job to apply for, complete the following tasks in relation to your application:
Part 1. Cover letter (600 words in total)
You are required to write a professional cover letter for the job you have chosen (see specific instructions below).
Material particularly covered in week 9 of the seminars will assist you with this task.
You must use the cover letter template provided in the Assessment Task 3 folder on CloudDeakin. For the purposes
of this assignment, and to facilitate marking, the template has been divided into two sections. You must ensure you
address the items outlined for each section as described below.
In addition ensure you complete all personal information, address details, etc. outlined on the template and consider
your tone of voice in the letter, your grammar, spelling, presentation and formal requirements of job letter writing.
Section (i) – (200 words) – Introduction
Write an introduction to your cover letter ensuring you:
• Make reference to the job you are applying for.
• Research the organisation you have chosen to work for and discuss why you want to work for this
organisation. You must outline which aspects of the organisation appeal to you.
• Provide a brief summary of why you want to work in this particular job role and what you have to offer the
employer. In your response you must demonstrate a clear understanding of the main function and
responsibilities of the role (this is not to be a list of the job duties/tasks).

Section (ii) – (400 words) – Body
Write the body of your cover letter providing a detailed summary of why you believe you are a suitable applicant for
this role. Do this by:
• Addressing five of the key candidate requirements (KSAOs/KSCs) of the role. Ensure you outline how your
personal KSAOs (knowledge/skills/experience/personal attributes and abilities) match each of those
requirements and give evidence to support each claim.
• Linking your capability in each of the five chosen candidate requirements (KSAOs/KSCs) to the relevant
part/s of the role – thereby highlighting how you will be able to perform that/those particular
tasks/responsibilities of the role.
Please Note: For this section DO NOT choose to address any of the following candidate requirements (KSAOs/KSCs):
• Educational qualifications
• Certifications or Licences
• Working with Children’s, Police or other Checks
Other details:
(i) For the purposes of this assignment you do not have to include a closing paragraph in the letter
(ii) The address, date, reference line, headings and salutations included on the template will not be included in
the word count
Part 2. Addressing key selection criteria (600 words)
Please note: you cannot exceed 200 words for any of these KSC responses
Section (i) – (200 words each) – Key Selection Criteria (KSC) specifically related to chosen job
Select two of the key selection criteria from your chosen job and prepare a written summary response to each
following the guidelines on preparing a response to KSCs, outlined in seminars in week 9.
Section (ii) – (200 words) – General key selection criteria
Provide a response to one of the following key selection criteria statements specifically using the STAR technique
outlined in seminars in week 9 and 10.
1. Describe a new initiative or idea that you introduced to your work area (or other aspect of your life such as
volunteer/study area). What approach did you take to get others to go along with it?
OR
2. Describe a time when a major change occurred in a job role you had (or other aspect of your life such as
volunteer/study area)? How did you adapt to this change? What were the challenges and how did you
overcome them?
