1. Trace the concerns facing African-Americans in the post-Civil War South between 1877
and 1900. Why did the “New South” become a difficult place for African-Americans to
live after Reconstruction ended? How did African-American leaders, such as Booker T.
Washington, W.E.B. Dubois, and John Hope, address the role of African-Americans in
United States society? Look specifically at Booker T. Washington’s “Atlanta
Compromise” speech and John Hope’s “Critique of the Atlanta Compromise” and show
how differences in language, audience, and approach characterize each work. What
principles seemed most important to each man and how did each present his vision and
defend it?
2. Offer a history of American industrialization from roughly 1877 to 1900. How did the
growth of big business, the prevalence of ideas such as Social Darwinism, the growth of
labor unions, and immigration and urbanization change American society? While many
commentators identified a growing gap between the rich and the poor as a problem, there
was considerable disagreement about what to do about it. Examine Andrew Carnegie’s
“Wealth” and Eugene Debs’ “Outlook for Socialism in the United States” and describe
the differences between each man’s arguments. Who do you think has the stronger
argument? Why? Is either approach an adequate solution to the problems of Gilded Age
society?
3. Prepare an essay in which you offer a history of American imperialism in the late
nineteenth century. How did the United States so quickly acquire an “empire” with
possessions in both the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea in the 1890s? Why were some
individuals in favor of American overseas expansion and why were others against it?
Specifically compare Albert J. Beveridge’s the “March of the Flag” and the platform of
the American Anti-Imperialist League to illustrate the differences between those in favor
of expansion and those against it. How does Beveridge, for example, use lofty, religious
language to vindicate American policies? How does the American Anti-Imperialist
League justify their critique of American imperialist practices? Overall, do you think that
American imperialism in the 1890s was driven more by a humanitarian desire to help
other countries or more by economic motivations, or is it perhaps best understood as a
balance between the two? Explain.
4. The Progressive Reform Movement was the first great reform movement of the twentieth
century. What was the general motivation behind the Progressive reforms and what
segment of American society had the greatest interest in promoting them? Why? Give a
general overview of private and government-sponsored reform efforts and describe how
government reform took place at the local, state, and federal levels. Provide specific
examples of reform measures and the abuses that they were designed to correct. How did
written works such as Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle and the visual imagery of the
photographs by Jacob Riis in How the Other Half Lives stimulate the push for reform?
