Lesson Plan Activity 3
Activity: Pretend that you are a hostage negotiator who has been called into a domestic dispute between a husband and wife. The wife is having a nervous breakdown at their house and throwing plates and bowls against the wall. When the HN arrives, she tries to set up a dialogue with the wife. Write an opening statement (where the HN establishes expertise, knowledge and goodwill). Then, based on the wife’s reply (see below), write a summary, paraphrase, non-judgemental and judgemental response to what she says.
Person in crisis: “I went to pick up my 6 year old son, Drew, from school yesterday and on the way there, I got a flat tire. I called my sister to come and get me, but she was not available. So, I tried my husband and his administrative assistant said he was at lunch. I started to panic because I knew that Drew would be worried when I didn’t show up on time. I called his school, but the line was busy. I felt paralyzed and couldn’t figure out how to get to his school in the next 10 minutes. I ended up getting CAA to change my flat tire, but by the time I got to Drew’s school, I was over 30 minutes late and he was crying and upset waiting for me in the principal’s office.”
