A. Preparing to analyse the interview:

1. Firstly, DOWNLOAD and READ all the information provided for – – –
a) TRUSTING THE COUNT (Level 1) and
b) PLACE VALUE (Level 2), that is, the tools, the resources and the teaching advice as seen in the video of how the teacher conducted the interview with the child … be specific and analytical ALWAYS REFERRING TO THE (AFCM) guide.

2. Read this information thoroughly to make sure you understand exactly
what is required and how the child may respond by using the (AFCM) guide.

B. Conducting the interview:

1. The tools within each Level in the video should be used in order.
2. Where the child fails to answer after a reasonable time, you should move on to the next part of the tool or the next tool at that Level.
NOTE WELL : Use the AfCM Recording Sheets for Trusting the Count and Place Value to record each child’s response to each tool attempted.
Record an asterisk against any tool that was not attempted and briefly say why.

C. Step 2: After the interview

Use the child’s responses and the advice included in the Assessment for Common Misunderstanding materials to identify three specific skills or strategies that you would TARGET to WRITE IN THE ESSAY ON HOW TO ASSIST THE CHILD.
a)… one that could be consolidated at home (e.g. recognizing the numbers 5-8 in terms of their parts without counting);
b) … one that could be considered in the context of a game (e.g., an app that reinforces renaming 3-digit numbers in terms of their place-value parts); and
c) … one best be addressed in the context of a focus group involving four other children with a similar learning need (e.g. counting large collections more efficiently).

Step 3: Prepare a Targeted Teaching Report

Includes the following:
a) … A brief description of the child, when and where the interview was conducted, in this case it was conducted in a home and what the child likes best about maths (no more than 25 words) —— Write 25 words in the essay about this point

b) … An indication of the three specific skills or strategies you plan to target and why-use evidence from the child’s responses in the interview (no more than 150 words in total) —- Write 150 words in the essay about this next requirement.
