During our last module, you crafted a paper describing your chosen artifact for the Popular Culture Analysis Assignment, the capstone project for this course. We are now moving on to contextualizing your artifact, that is, providing a sense for how it is situated in a broader popular culture landscape. The nature and scope of this “landscape” will be largely determined by the artifact you have chosen. It may have a local (e.g., Colorado), national (e.g., United States), or global scope. It may be a part of some segment of popular culture. For example, its immediate context may be the music industry, the television or film industry, the social media environment, etc. It may also have historical and/or contemporary scope. For example, you may have chosen an artifact from a previous generation that still has purchase today. Or, you may have chosen something very recent. In short, you should be prepared to offer an overall account of the when, where, why, how, and who of your artifact as part of this paper.
As you move into your analysis, you should make use of Bitzer’s theory of “the rhetorical situation” by commenting on your artifact’s “exigence(s)” (what called for its production in the first place?), its “rhetorical audience(s)” (who is meant to consume this artifact and how are they meant to relate to it?), and any “constraints” (what are the limitations on this artifact’s uptake, challenges facing its producers and consumers as they attempt to make use of and incorporate it into their lifeworld, and technological “affordances” that both limit and promote the circulation and potential interaction with the artifact?). The point of this analysis is to provide a more robust understanding of how your artifact fits a larger picture and whether and to what extent it is providing what Bitzer would have called a “fitting response” to its moment. You may want to review the Module 2 Lecture and readings as you work on completing this paper.
Once you’ve built and explained the rhetorical situation for your pop culture artifact, reflect more on the relationship between the context and your artifact. What new insights or surprises about the pop culture artifact emerge from researching the context that shaped its emergence? What confirmations or certainties present themselves to you as you learn about your pop culture artifact’s context?
Your paper should be 2-3 double-spaced pages. It should be written in Times New Roman (Font 12), with 1-inch margins. For the purposes of this paper, we also expect you to make use of scholarly and/or journalistic resources including books, articles, websites, and the like that provide the texture for your contextual analysis. In other words, you should reference materials that help you tell a story about your artifact. 3-5 such sources should be used in the completion of this paper.
