Which traditional theory is the most useful for health practitioners? Why?

As I research the traditional theories of Plato, Aristotle, Rousseau and Kant I find that I agree with aspects of each. However, in choosing the most useful theory for health care practitioners, I would have to go with Aristotle and Empiricism. As health care practitioners we utilize associative learning in teaching our clients new information and techniques to accomplish goals (Schunk, 2020).

A common tool used by occupational therapy practitioners is self-reflection. As practitioners we reflect on experience and create plans to make the experience better the next time. The process of self-reflection encourages continued learning and development as a practitioner and professional health care practitioner. According to Schunk (2020), “Locke noted that there are no innate ideas; all knowledge derives from two types of experience: sensory impressions of the external world and personal awareness” (p. 6) instantly brought occupational therapy to mind. When working with clients the occupational therapy practitioner takes into consideration how the client participates in and performs occupations in the context in which they are performed. Occupation-based interventions relate to the client’s personal awareness of abilities, the effects of the external world and the sensory input in performing the occupation while learning or re-learning tasks.
As an occupational therapy practitioner, I want to give a “shout out” to Ebbinghaus. According to Schunk (2020), “He found that meaningfulness of material made learning easier” (p. 8). Occupational therapy practitioners provide meaningful client-centered activities to motivate clients to participate in restoring, adapting and/or maintaining function after injury or illness.
