The logical winner, without reading about the war, would be the Persian army. At the time of the war’s start, the Persians were united and strong. They also had a bigger army than the Greeks. The Greeks were still divided and weren’t willing to work together, however; over time, the Greeks came together to fight for their freedom. The Greeks had more motivation to win the war as well as many other advantages against the Persian army. For one, they were more athletically inclined. From my reading, it talked about how the Greeks could swim and when the Persians fell into the water they would drown. One example of this is when “the Greeks practiced a new maneuver. The plan was to move quickly alongside an enemy ship. Once there, at the last second, they practiced raising their oars vertically, fast and hard, to break the enemy’s oars. If they broke them, the ship would be stuck. The men could not row away until they were given new oars. The men could not swim away because they could not swim. Basically, they would be sitting ducks. It was a very smart plan.” This also showed that the Persian army lacked courage. Another advantage was the location of each battle. It was on Greek soil and the terrain was narrow and difficult for the Persians to navigate. The Greek army eventually won the war by working together and uniting their divided states.

Post 2 – Kyle S

Hello Everyone,

After reading the assigned chapters and given what knowledge I have on the events prior to this class I have been able to identify the strengths and weaknesses of both the Persians and the Greeks. I will start off with the Persians, I would have to say the one main strength of the Persian Army was its size, The Persian Kings ruled over a vast empire allowing it to draw in large numbers of conscripts from all the lands that they had ruled over. With that being said I also think that it could be considered a weakness as well. Having an Army so large and from many different nations speaking many different languages and different fighting styles can and proved difficult to lead in battle. Another weakness of the Persians is they had little knowledge of the terrain of the battlefields whether it be on land or at sea it proved very costly to them. The Persians also made the fatal mistake of underestimating their enemy which as we have seen all throughout history can be very costly as well. A great example of this would be the battle of thermopile where the underestimated the opposing force of 300 Spartans willing to fight and die rather than surrender.

When it comes to the Greeks strengths and weaknesses, I would have to say that the weaknesses of the Greeks were the fact that they had a alliance of over 30 separate city states that had different agendas and ideas on how to fight the Persians. Their other weakness was that their numbers we much smaller than the Persians. Now for their strengths. What the Greeks lacked in size they well made up for it in tactics, equipment, and knowledge of the battlefield. The Greeks also possessed a greater will to fight. We can see examples of this at the battle of Marathon, Thermopile, and the naval battle at  Salamis. Though the different city states disagreed on much, they stood in complete solidarity in their will to fight and defeat the Persians.
