Policing in urban communities

Part I:

Write your revised two-part thesis statement here, and be sure to include a claim + reason (the “because” or “since” clause):

            Police officers in urban communities should be required to patrol minority neighborhoods on the ground (foot, patrol, bike, etc), because this will put them in a position to meet the people they are tasked to protect and build relationships with members of the community.

State the underlying assumption of your argument:

            That there is a disconnect between people in urban communities and the police officers who are tasked to protect them.

Part II:

Purpose

The purpose is to bring attention to policing in urban communities.  This is with the hope of bringing forth change in the policing techniques in this community.  The ability of both sides to be able to communicate in a civil way is the only change that will come about.

Target audience –

Target audience would be politicians who can help change policies, police officers to help them have a better understanding of the community they are policing.  Media outlet with multicultural following to help open dialogue.  Other cultures that only get information on the black community through movies and rumors.  Black people who are not from the inner city who may not face the same strugglers as the inner city population.

Setting

The setting is the urban community.  The interactions throughout history with law enforcement and the urban community.  The topic will cover the time periods from the end of slavery to current times to be able to show how the system was built without the urban community as part of it.

Part III:

Pathos

Target audience is politicians that will help develop the necessary training to help policing in urban communities.  Police officer with the hope of uniting them and the community to help foster change and build better relationships with minorities.  Priorities are racial equality and a more effective and fair style of policing.  The things to take in consideration is that most non minority politicians and law enforcement may truly not be able to understand these struggles, so as minorities we have to be able to articulate our views.  We must understand, if someone grows up and never had a negative interaction with a police officer you may not believe they are capable of the things you are hearing and reading.

Ethos

The complexity of this statement is that there are many assumptions and misconceptions.  Such as, if a police officer pulls you over you have done something wrong, only guilty people run from police officers.  Most black men and women are law abiding citizens and yet still have to deal with stereotypes from law enforcement.  The color of our skin should not dictate how we are treated in this great country.  People of all shades have sacrificed their lives defending this country in the hope that we are all treated equally and fair.  To quote the late great Martin Luther King Jr. “Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into a friend”.

Logos

The recent murders of unarmed black men and women.  Police body cams and cellphone videos showing the treatment of unarmed minorities.  Logical fallacies to avoid is that all cops are bad.  This should never be a blanket statement that all cops are bad.  The facts will probably show there are more good cops than bad cops.  This doesn’t negate the facts that there are too many that abuse their authority in the treatment of minorities.
