Analyze Current Bilingual/ESL Program

How familiar are you with the programs and services available to English learners (EL) in your school or district?

According to Rennie (1993), the best bilingual/ESL programs answer “yes” to all of the following questions:

Is the program successful in promoting the academic achievement of bilingual and ESL students?
Is the program tailored to meet the linguistic, academic, and affective needs of students?
Does the program provide students with the instruction necessary to allow them to progress through school at a rate commensurate with their native-English-speaking peers?
Does the program make the best use of district and community resources?
In this module’s assignment, you will analyze the current bilingual/ESL program in a target school, preferably your own. To get started, access the following resource: English Language Learners (Links to an external site.) – Princeton Public Schools.

You will find a brief analysis of an ESL-bilingual program in the Princeton (New Jersey) Public Schools to use as a resource as you analyze your school’s program.

You may be able to answer many of the analysis questions from personal experience. If not, consult your School Improvement Plan (SIP), State Report Card, school district Website, or an experienced bilingual/ESL teacher.

NOTE: If you are not working in a U.S. school, please describe and analyze the school and program in which you are working or to which you have access. If you do not have access to a school, you may choose to use the internet and research a school and its programming. If you have any concerns about your ability to complete this assignment, contact your faculty member.
