The purpose of this activity is for students to apply the steps needed to submit a consumer issue to the Small Claims Court in their locale.
Instructions:
Follow the steps below to complete and submit your Small Claims Court Assignment. The Small Claims Court rubric (found under the Course Syllabus found in the Start Here information as well as attached to the assignment dropbox) will be used to assess this activity.
1. Use the case study below (or one you have actually been involved in) to answer the questions about small claims court cases for your state:
Case Study:
Emma loved her apartment. Her place was close to the bus line, and she had a great relationship with her neighbors. The one thing Emma didn’t like was her landlord, Camden. Camden neglected his tenants. He once refused to fix a broken lock at the building’s entrance until a tenant threatened to call the city. Emma always tried her best to avoid any conflicts with him. When Emma graduated and was transferred to a new job in a different city, she moved out. She asked for the return of her $1,400 security deposit. But Camden only returned $560 to her, stating that the other $840 was needed for repairs. Emma was furious and disputed the claims. Camden refused to budge. Emma’s friend suggested mediation, but Emma didn’t trust Camden to negotiate in good faith. She called a lawyer, who told her that filing a lawsuit and going through a trial would likely cost more than the $840 for which she would be suing. The lawyer suggested Emma go to Small Claims Court.
