Single source Argument Essay

Paper 2: Argumentation/Persuasion

Read the article, “Should Everyone Go to College?” by Stephanie Owen and Isabel Sawhill on P. 208 from They Say I Say and write an argument paper by taking the side of Yes or No to the question.

You should include, in your paper, an arguable proposition.  You can base your argument on either logic (argumentative) or emotion (persuasive), which means your essay can be charged emotionally, appealing to readers’ feelings with emotional details.  Your paper is to convince your readers to accept your opinion or move your readers to take an action, so you should use supportive evidence such as facts, examples, testimony (authoritative sources), statistics and experiences to support your proposition. The supporting details can be drawn from your personal experiences or observations and mostly from this essay. You may summarize the details from the essays or integrate short quotations in your argument. Do not copy large blocks of text from the article.

The organization of this paper should be based on the handout “Suggested Structure of an Argument” on Blackboard.

Your paper will be graded on the following points:

  1. A clear thesis statement of your arguable proposition with an unexpressed assumption.
  2. An orderly and appropriate presentation of the evidence.
  3. A coherent connection between the evidence and the argument of your preposition.
  4. A conclusion that emphasizes your proposition.
  5. Correct MLA documentation.
  6. Correctness of grammar, punctuation and spellings.
