1. What items are not allowed in lab rooms?

• No food or beverages are allowed.
• Bags, books, purses, coats, sweaters and all personal electronic devices are not allowed in lab work areas but can be stored in designated areas.
• Loose or dangling clothes, excessive jewelry and hair must be not worn or be controlled or covered.
• Do not touch your eyes, mouth or face while in lab. If you need to do so, remove gloves and eye protection, then wash your hands before touching your face. After touching your face, use new gloves and replace eye wear.
• No horse-play, rowdiness or clowning in lab.
• Do not wear flip flops when going to lab class.

3. What is required if you have a cut or lesion on your hands? Report all open cuts and lesions on your hands prior to starting lab activities. Cuts and lesions must be covered with a bandage and gloves.

4. When is it required to wash your hands in lab? Hands must be washed before and after each lab activity.

5. How long should you wash your hands? Thoroughly wet hands, distribute iodine hand soap over entire hands, and rub vigorously for at least ten seconds.

6. How are washed hands dried properly? Thoroughly dry with paper toweling and dispose of the paper.

7. Define PPE (Personal protective equipment)? Personal protective equipment refers to protective clothing gloves goggles or other equipment designed to protect your body from injury or infection. PPE should be chosen based on the work being completed worn and stored only inside the laboratory and all employees utilizing PPE should be properly trained with their equipment.

8. List the PPE items that must be worn at all times? Personal protective equipment must be worn during all lab work. These include lab apron or coat, eye protection and gloves.

9. When is it required to disinfect all work surfaces in lab? Before and after each lab class meeting. Apply liquid disinfectant and wiping down the surfaces.

10. Once in a lab space, what should you avoid touching? Do not touch your eyes, mouth or face while in lab. Do not pipette by mouth.

11. What is done with contaminated liquids in lab? All contaminated liquids are sterilized in an autoclave and never poured into the sinks or disposal containers and bags.

12. How do you dispose of contaminated solids in lab? All contaminated solids like petri plates and contaminated disposable supplies are placed in biohazard bags to be sterilized in an autoclave including paper towels, swabs, and other materials that have bacteria.
