[60%]
Complete Part A & B: Both parts are to be submitted as a single document

PART A: Essay (max. 1500 Words)
Answer 1 question only. When you submit your coursework, it is important
that you clearly indicate the question that you have selected.
1. In their analysis of metaphor, Lakoff and Johnson suggest “we act
according to the way we conceive of things.” What are the implications
of this for understanding organisations and organisational practice?
2. In what ways is institutional talk similar to, and different from, casual
conversation? Illustrate your answer with examples.
3. Use examples to explain how conversation analysis provides a distinctive
approach to the study of call centre work.
It is expected that students make significant use of additional readings to
complement core module materials (lecture/tutorial work, case studies, core
readings, etc.).

PART B: Project (max. 2000 Words)
Students are required to undertake research on organisational texts or talk at
work. This will involve the collection and analysis of data (either recordings or
other texts).
For example, data can include one or a combination of:
Recordings of relevant materials found on YouTube
Websites (e.g. corporate websites, etc.)
Organisational documents or marketing materials (e.g. official reports;
company recruitment literature; adverts; product packaging; etc.)

The study should draw on an analytic approach within the traditions of the
organisational discourse or institutional talk programmes. The study should
consider issues of relevance to our understanding of work and organisations;
e.g. the discursive construction of organisational identities; the institutional
character of talk; organisational storytelling; corporate rhetoric; etc.
Marks will be assigned to the:
introduction to, and motivation for, the research study
account of the analytic approach adopted (including the choice,
description and selection of the research data)
quality of the data analysis, which should:
o include insightful observations;
o be organised into meaningful analytic themes
o be clearly evidenced by appropriate qualitative data)
discussion of the relevance of the findings for the study of work and
organisations
(reference to existing literature is expected here)
