Exercise 1

You are required to develop an ER model based on the following requirements of a COMPANY Database:

 

  1. The company is organized into DEPARTMENTs. Each department has a name, number and an employee who manages the department. We keep track of the start date of the department manager. A department may have several locations.
  2. Each department controls a number of PROJECTs. Each project has a unique name, unique number and is located at a single location
  3. The database will store each EMPLOYEE’s emirate ID number, address, salary, gender, and birthdate.
  4. Each employee works for one department but may work on several projects. The DB will keep track of the number of hours per week that an employee currently works on each project. It is required to keep track of the direct supervisor of each employee.
  5. Each employee may have a number of DEPENDENTs. For each dependent, the DB keeps a record of name, gender, birthdate, and relationship to the employee

 

Exercise 2

You are required to develop an EER model based on the following requirements of a University Database:

 

  • The database keeps track of three types of persons: employees, alumni, and student. A person can belong to one, two or all three of these types. Each person has a name, ID, gender, and birth date.

 

  • Every employee has a salary, and there are three type of employees: faculty, staff and student assistants. Each employee belongs to exactly one of these types. For each alumni a record of the degree or degrees that he /she earned at the university is kept, including the name of the degree, the year granted, and the major department. Each student has a major department.

 

  • Each faculty has a rank, whereas each staff member has staff position. Student assistants are classified further as either research assistants or teaching assistants and the percent of time they work is recorded in the database. Research assistants have their research project stored whereas teaching assistants have the current course they work on.

 

  • Students are further classified as either graduate or undergraduate
