The written submission for this module takes the form of typed dissertation. This report will come under close scrutiny by assessors and possibly also by the External Examiners and therefore should be correct, both scientifically and grammatically, or you will lose marks. Dissertations should conform with the following guidelines, based on “Instructions to Authors” for a typical journal publication.
The report should be of a conventional standard. Several books have been written to illuminate the necessary techniques for writing a dissertation and students are advised to support their study by accessing this literature. Advice should also be sought from the supervisor who may be the assessor of the project. It is therefore advisable that the student makes appropriate enquiry with their supervisor on the rudiments of a research report.
Your best approach is to use a range of primary scientific papers to get a ‘feel’ for the appropriate style – you will consult an increasing number of peer-reviewed papers and articles during your final year (e.g. as background reading to the project, & in many other units, including the independent literature review) and you should regard these papers as useful illustrative examples. Your supervisor may (or may not) have reports from students in previous years.
Please note the word limits provided for each section are simply guidance, they are not cast in stone.

The maximum word limit for the final report is 15,000 – 20,000 words. ( References and appendices do not contribute to the word count)
Layout of major sections
A good report should develop the theme of the project in a logical manner. Therefore, the report should be divided into the following major sections, with sub-headings.
There are five major sections to a scientific report; Introduction, methods, results and discussion and conclusion plus the abstract. These sections structure your report to say “this is the problem, this is how I studied it, this is what I found, and this is what it means.” You must also include the title, references, and appendices.
