Social history

The paper revolves around the history of the Trans-Atlantic slave trade. There are 3 parts to the paper.

Part 1: The writer must go to a website and read two short essays on the topic. The first is called “A Brief Overview of the Transatlantic Slave Trade” and the second is called “Seasonality in the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade.” They can both be found at the following link:

The different parts of the essays can be clicked on the side of the page.

The second part is to access the database on the same website ( to build a spreadsheet. To do so, go to Trans-Atlantic -> Database. Under “Itinerary,” click “place of departure,” then “place where voyage began,” set the criteria for “Mainland North America” and click apply.
After that, click “Ship, Nation, Owner,” then select “Flag” on the side, and select U.S.A. on the dropdown box and click apply again.
From here, the writer can add any other criteria relevant to the thesis. There must be a spreadsheet with the data of at least 30 trips that are in some way connected within a unit of time (for example: a given year, given decade, the Civil War, etc.).

The third part is the actual paper. The primary hypothesis for the paper should be an agreement or disagreement with the argument presented in “Seasonality in the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade” by Stephen Behrendt. The writer must also add a secondary thesis onto the paper that allows them to look at another aspect of the slave trade, such as gender, mortality, geography, etc.

The paper must have an introduction, thesis, body, and conclusion. It should include the hard data from research (table or graph) and it’s description. It should also include a visual representation of the data that is symmetrical, user-friendly, and full of information that can aid the writer and reader’s interpretation of the data collected.
