Golden Ratio Myth-Busting

There are many popular claims about the golden ratio, golden rectangles, and golden spirals. Some of these
claims are well supported by facts, but others are examples of wishful or mystical thinking run amok. Using
our in-class exploration of golden ratio myths as a starting point, choose one specific myth to examine in
more depth. You will need to incorporate at least five primary or secondary sources. You may begin your
search with tertiary sources, but should avoid including them. A source with no references will probably
not be useful for this investigation unless it is a primary source.
Your essay should include the following components.
Introduction and Background. This section should contain three key components, but the order in
which you address them is up to you:
• A description of the question you are going to investigate.
• Background information about the golden ratio and any other information a reader unfamiliar
with the topic might need.
• An explanation of the nature of the claim and the standards of evidence that apply in accepting
it or rejecting it, including a mention of what academic disciplines might be relevant. Make it
clear what might cause you to accept the claim and what might cause you to reject it. You may
need to briefly discuss standards of truth in the involved disciplines.
Three Arguments. Three sections should each be devoted to discussion of a different argument of line
of evidence about the claim OR a different aspect of the main claim. If your claim is very simple and
easy to establish one way or the other, you may want to broaden it or instead use the three sections
to consider three related claims. Look for sources supporting AND opposing each point of view, if
possible. (There are some lines of evidence or argument that are irrefutable, and in such cases you
do not need to present two sides.)
Your Own Investigation. Conduct your own investigation of the claim(s). This could be be a numerical
simulation, a survey, an experiment, or your own analysis applied to examples or some form of data.
Explain what you did and your findings.
Conclusion. What do you think about the claim based on the lines of argument you presented and your
own investigation? What did you learn that you found most interesting? What broader implications
does your finding have? What does this investigation teach us?
References or Works Cited. Any reasonable method of citing and listing sources is acceptable. At
least five of the listed sources must be primary or secondary sources that you cited in your paper.
