Global climate change

Question 1.

To answer these discussion questions you will need to read the online post “25 Ways to Reduce Your Carbon Footprint.”

Discussion Questions (Please respond to both – you may answer in two parts):

1) Select two of the 25 proposed actions that you feel are the most feasible and easy to implement. Discuss the potential reductions in carbon emissions that these actions would create.

2) We can probably all agree one family isn’t going to save the world.  But, what if we all made some of these same changes, do you think it would be possible to ward-off increases in CO2 levels?  Are there other changes we could make that might have a greater impact? Explain. How can we as a society create collective change?

Question 2.

Personal CO2 Emissions Calculations and Reduction Plan

For this written assignment you will calculate your own annual CO2 emissions using the Personal CO2 Emissions Calculator from the Environmental Protection Agency’s website.  You will then create a word document that includes the results from your personal calculations, a plan to reduce your CO2 emissions by 20%, and one of the changes you may choose to implement  throughout the remainder of the course.

You will also be asked to watch the video ‘Recipes for Disaster’.  This will help you think about behavior changes you could make.

Please read the site “25+ tips to Reduce your Carbon Footprint” as this provides a good example of some big and small changes a family can take to reduce their CO2 emissions.  You will also need to watch this for the module discussion.

Step 1: Click the link below and fill out the questions to the best of your ability.  There is no right or wrong answer so please be honest with your usage.

Carbon Footprint calculator.

Step 2: Next, copy or record all of your results in a Word document. (Easiest way is to copy your results from the screen to Word document.)

Step 3: Now, using the CO2 emissions calculator and your results, develop a plan on how you could reduce your CO2 emissions by 20%.  Include in your plan the calculations and changes in lifestyle necessary to meet this 20% reduction.  Submit this plan in a written format.  Be sure to explain what behavior changes you would implement and the calculations of how much CO2 you would reduce.  Be sure to also cite any outside sources you use to develop this plan. (This is a hypothetical example but should include steps you might reasonably take.)

Step 4:  Implement some of these changes throughout the remainder of the course.  and post your changes and results in the CO2 Reduction Project discussion. Include the activity you intend to do, your overall goal for reduction, how much CO2 you will save (calculate to the best of your ability), your actual activity each week, how much CO2 you actually saved each week and your thoughts on this process.

Step 5: Submit your assignment in a written document with the following information:

  1. Your CO2 emissions calculator results;
  2. A plan on how you would reduce your emissions by 20%, include your behavior changes and calculations;

Complete Steps 6-8 Using the Discussion

Step 6: Beginning in week 5, start to track your weekly progress.  Please track your progress throughout the remaining duration of the course.  Your grade for this ongoing project will be added to your final grade at the end of the term.

Step 7: Record a summary of your activities that week. If you are able to calculate how much CO2 you saved (or didn’t) you can add that info to the discussion as well.

Step 8: Track your progress each week and add to your diary.

This is intended to be a fun, challenging exercise to teach you about how individuals can make small changes to help reduce carbon emissions.  Please provide accurate data–if you didn’t make any changes during a particular week, that’s okay.  The purpose is for you to challenge yourself to make some changes, and at the same time do the calculations so you can see how you are contributing to overall carbon emissions and/or reductions.

Question 3

Based on the maps, the data provided and any scientific data you are able to find from scholarly sources, answer the following questions in a written document and upload the file below.

    • Which state has the highest total CO2 emissions? Provide a hypothesis for why this state has the highest total level of CO2 emissions. Is there some characteristic of this state that causes the higher emission levels? (State by State Total CO2 Emissions)
    • NOTE: in the past we used an EPA source for this emissions data. The data on the EPA site are no longer available. If EIA site in the link above is also taken down, please contact your Instructor.
    • Which state has the highest per capita CO2 emissions? Explain why this state has the highest level of CO2 emissions per capita.
    • From the article,  Does Size Matter? Scaling of CO2 Emissions and U.S. Urban Areas, Are larger cities more energy efficient than smaller ones? Do larger cities exhibit gains from economies of scale with regard to emissions?
    • Based on your analysis and other information you locate (be sure to cite your sources), what factor presents the greatest challenge in terms of controlling global CO2 emissions: the increasing world population or potential increases in the average amount of CO2 released per person?
