Rhetorical Analysis

CONTENT: For this essay, you will analyze a newspaper editorial of your choice. My suggestion would be a source that is from a “.org” website, or local newspaper. There are also archived editorials from newspapers such as the New York Times, LA Times, Dallas Times Herald, etc. Avoid fringe sites.

1) In the introduction, you will explain who the writer is and what credentials he or she has (if it’s an editorial board, you can mention the general credentials/ experience of the people), the type of text being analyzed (an editorial), as well as the title.

Then, make a thesis statement about how the author uses specific rhetorical devices to put forth his or her message, and whether or not the approach is effective in terms of argumentation. It is your job to choose which strategies are used, and to choose three.
Rhetorical devices (choose only three):

Appeals: ethos , logos, pathos

Style: diction, syntax, details, imagery, tone.

2) In the body paragraphs, you will develop your thesis statement with specific examples from the editorial that prove your argument. You will need to clearly explain how the example functions, and why it is or is not successful in terms of the argument of the editorial. You will need to make sure your analysis is comprehensive, not biased, and shows critical thinking about the art of rhetoric.

3) In the conclusion, you will need to connect your editorial and argument to a current event or enduring social issue. Explain the connection fully, and how the editorial can give insight to the issue.
