Exploring the community assessment

As the first activity of the Community Assessment, this activity allows the student to begin considering a social issue. Your consideration of these questions is ongoing throughout your assessment.

Topic is Mental health

Using your chosen topic, respond to the following questions with 5-10 sentences:

1. What do you already “know” about the issue based on your personal experience? (Remember at this point, your knowledge may only be assumption. Think about what you learned in your life about the issue. What do you know now? You will become more familiar with the empirical professional knowledge as the semester continues.)

2. Who affected by this issue? Who is the Client System?
(race, gender, age, etc.)

See Page 8 Course Txt.

Where might you find the people who experience this issue? Is it in a specific part of the country, or town, or neighborhood?

Please Begin your in depth research learning all you can about the client system. Begin researching data on the country, the state, the community you have chosen? Begin to gather as much from the professionals about your topic. Professionals are those who have studied the population and/or the area and have well informed data. Look at organizations such as the CDC, United Way, Hospitals, Social Services, Government agencies, etc to find exactly who the people affected are who are. You will need this information to form your conclusions later. An assessment begins with collecting ALL of the information regarding subject. You may not use it all in the end, but it is helpful to find as much information as possible in your topic, the community, and the people there.

For the purposes of this assignment, provide at least 5 facts about the community that you have learned from beginning the research. Remember facts are typically statistical or professionally researched. They are not merely opinion. This research should continue for the first couple of weeks. As you explore, the facts, some themes or ideas regarding the populations issues in this location and the causes will begin to emerge. Lack of thorough research is the biggest error typically made in an assessment. The more information you gather, the better. Take good notes as you move through the project.

3. What is the impact of this issue on the community? How is the community currently dealing with the issue? Are there currently supports in place regarding the issue (laws, organizations, etc.)?
