Every so often a large corporation will experience a data breach, leaving millions of their users in jeopardy as private records are leaked to the world. This year, during the midst of a worldwide pandemic, Twitter who is one of the superpowers in the social media world, was hacked by a seventeen-year-old hacker. A recent high school graduate from Florida, the mastermind behind this attack, Graham Ivan Clark, was able to breach high profile celebrity accounts such as Barack Obama, Elon Musk, and Bill Gates, just to name a few.

Unfortunately, this was an issue revolving around Twitters network. The small group of hackers were eventually caught by law enforcement after the tracks they left were discovered and traced. Of course, people are going to blame “social engineering” for this massive blunder, but what was the actual cause of this colossal failure? These computer wizards were able to target some of Twitters internal tools and manipulate them with a series of code to access database records. Their mission was simple; broadcast a bitcoin scamming link by using high profile users to reach as many people as possible. This way, they would have a higher chance of securing more bitcoin before transferring it to offline wallets until the dust settled.

How did Twitter let this happen? While we may never know the true story, one thing is for certain; a random individual should not have access to anything private in Twitters networks, even if it is the CEO’s son’s best friend. Luckily, they were able to bring an abrupt halt to the heist, but it should not have happened in the first place. One trade-off for having a more advanced security policy might involve having to spend more money on resources and training. However, with a company as well known and globally use like Twitter, they should not be undercutting the budget when it comes to security issues.
