Ethical Dilemma Paper

This paper will serve as an in-depth exploration of the ethical decision-making process.  Students will identify one of the National Association of Social Workers’ Code of Ethics standards under the category of Responsibilities to Clients.  Students will outline and explain this standard and apply it to a possible real life example in their professional work.  Students will work through the ethical dilemma following the 8 step process outlined in Kirst-Ashman & Hull (2011).

This paper has three distinct parts.  In the first section, students will select one of the following standards from the NASW Code of Ethics: 1.01, 1.02, 1.03, 1.04, 1.05, 1.06, 1.07, 1.08, 1.09, 1.10, 1.11, 1.12, 1.13, 1.14, 1.15, 1.16.  Students will describe this standard in a way that demonstrates their understanding of the standard.  This section of the paper will be 1-2 pages in length.  Students will not simply quote the standard but explain it in their own words.

In the next section, students will imagine and describe a scenario where they are confronted with an ethical dilemma that is relatable to the standard that they have described.  Students will have to use their imagination to identify this possible scenario in a professional social work environment where they would be confronted with the scenario.  Students will describe this scenario in significant detail.  This section of the paper will be 1-2 pages in length.

In the last section, students will work through the 8 step process of resolving ethical dilemmas as outlined in Kirst-Ashman & Hull (2011) starting on p. 413.  Students will identify how they would see each of the 8 steps playing out in their ethical dilemma identified in the previous section.  This section of the paper will be 3-4 pages in length.  Students will describe how they would go through each of the eight steps as they apply the standard to their fictional ethical dilemma.

The paper must be written in 12 point font with double spacing and page numbers.  The paper will be no less than 5 pages and must be turned in via Bb by the due date in order to get the full possibility of points earned.  Late papers will be accepted.  Papers that are turned in after the due date may be turned in via email as a MS Word attachment.  Papers that are turned in within 24 hours of being due will earn a total possible 90% of points for the assignment.  Papers turned in more than 24 hours after the assignment is due will be worth 50% of possible points.  The last day to turn in a late paper is the last day of class.  Papers must contain proper spelling and grammar.  Points will be deducted for poor grammar and spelling.  If a paper has significant spelling and grammar mistakes, the paper may be returned to the student to be re-written and turned in for a reduced number of points.  Students are encouraged to make use of the Writing Center on campus for help with their writing.
