Interpersonal communication

Process

  • Read Chapters 7 & 8 in your textbook or read the PowerPoints on Blackboard.
  • You will then find one human to have a conversation with. This can be anyone you know or a stranger.
  • The conversation should be conducted in-person or through skype or FaceTime.
  • The conversation should be informal and should focus on any information that you want to learn about your subject. More will be discussed in class.
  • Try to think of roughly 10 questions to ask your subject. Focus on aspects of the subject’s life, career, family, future aspirations etc.…
  • You do not need to record the conversation but may take notes.
  • During the conversation you want to pay attention to your subject’s behavior, word choice, and nonverbal messages.
  • You will then compile all your information and compose an essay that:
  1. Discusses your experience from an interpersonal
    1. Utilize terms and concepts from chapters 7-8 in the text to discuss your experience during the interview. (Power points will be on Blackboard if you did not purchase textbook)
    2. You may discuss things such as Self-disclosure, equivocation, conflict, verbal, non-verbal messages etc…
    3. The idea is to give me a sense of how you felt before, during, and after the conversation.
    4. Were there any verbal or non-verbal messages that confused you or made you feel relaxed?
    5. Did you or the subject use self-disclosure and if so how did it help or hurt the experience?
    6. You may discuss any term, theory, or concept that relates to interpersonal communication.
    7. You do not need to provide direct quotes from the conversation or any specific content from the experience. Instead you want to focus the essay on discussing your experience through an interpersonal perspective. Try to work-in/discuss as many terms and concepts from your textbook that relate to interpersonal communication as possible.
