Guidelines for SRRs

  1. Each SRR will deal with the content from a part of the course. For SRR 2, the topic is the concept of the genre, audience, and context of use– focus on its significance in writing.
  2. The SRR can‪—but does not have to‪—expand on a point you make in a discussion post – the SRR, which gives you more space to think and write about something than a discussion post allows.
  3. Each SRR should be at least 800 words without filler, although you can submit it in any spacing or format you choose. Keep in mind, however, that this is a more substantial assignment than a daily discussion post, so be sure to submit a document that has been edited and that uses a clear presentation. Use continuous prose; create an organized essay.

What is the goal of SRR 2?

The SRR is an exercise in which you summarize, respond to, and reflect on the learning content you’ve encountered. For SRR 2 the topic is the concepts of the genre, audience, and context of use and how the concepts are connected for writers.. You can draw from the textbook discussion posts, or other course materials to come up with content to write about. The goal of the SRR is not only to reiterate what you’ve learned (summarize) but also to make sense of it in writing (respond to it) and think about how it fits with everything you’re learning or with your college studies or some aspect of your life in which you’re writing (reflect).

Specifically, your SRR should include:

  • Summary: a recap of the content you have chosen as your focus for the SRR, around the specific topic. In this case, you can discuss any concept(s) related to the rhetorical situation.
  • Response: a discussion or interpretation of the content, in which you offer insight and analysis of the value of that content – interpretation is more than opinion in that your points should be backed up by evidence from course material or elsewhere. When you make a claim or you argue a point, support it with details from the material to explain.
  • Reflection: write about what you are thinking about the material, which is where the real learning happens. When we reflect, or think back on something, we make sense of it. This leads to metacognition, or big-picture thinking. When you engage in reflection, especially written reflection, you are abstracting thought and thus creating knowledge. Write about why you think what you think about something.

The SRRs are not a test of whether you read the material. They are an exercise in writing to learn what you know. I will be generous on the grading for the first SRR.
